Changing the Start button image

I like the image of the Windows Start button, and when I install Fedora Core 4 here pretty soon, I probably would like to change the Red Hat icon to the Windows Start button icon. I have two images of the Start button. One with the button up, and one of the button down. I know in Xandros all I have to do is move the current images of the default Launch button to a different folder, and then move the images of the Windows Start button to that folder /usr/share/apps/kicker/pixmaps. Then to make the switch I just right-click on the taskbar and choose a different size and then switch it back to the default size and the new image shows. Is the process the same in Fedora Core 4?

Yike! Blasphemy!

Fedora does not have a (shudder) start button. That thing on the far left of your bottom panel is the main menue launcher. It is not a button - adding a button here would involve writing an applet to show the button "up" or "down".

OTOH: you can change the image easily enough.

[mutter] why anyone would want to press "start" when they want to "stop" I don't know...[/mutter]

I did get to see the InformIt article but the other links I could not open. If I wanted to change the hat icon what are some other choices available?

The rough-and-ready method is just to track down the hat icon and replace it just like you do in Xandros.

In FC4 - the hat icon changes to a gnome foot (in Gnome of course) with some themes. I don't like the red fedora but am happy with the foot, so I havn't actually tracked it down there. Icon sets seem to live in /usr/share/pixmaps but I seem to have found a logo (shadowman.png) in /usr/share/firstboot/pixmaps ... no doubt there are others.
