Question cannot start Mysql

hi all

I have just install MySql v.5.0.27 on my fedora box.
But i couldnt start it.
here is my problem.
Quote:
$sudo /sbin/chkconfig --level 2345 mysql on
$ sudo /sbin/service mysql restart
MySQL manager or server PID file could not be found! [FAILED]
Starting MySQL................................... [FAILED]
Code:
 /usr/bin/mysqladmin version
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!
and i check my.cnf file

Quote:
[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
# Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x
# clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package).
old_passwords=1

[mysql.server]
user=mysql
#basedir=/var/lib

[mysqld_safe]
log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid
i follow the /var/lib/mysql but i couldnt found mysql.sock even in /tmp dir.
then i change own permission for that dir but still nothing happen yet

Quote:
ps aux | grep mysqld
user 4735 0.0 0.0 3956 732 pts/4 R+ 10:35 0:00 grep mysqld
as above information, my sql still not start yet.

my question is
what is this problem and how can fix it?

thanks you in advance

Try this command:

Quote:
/etc/init.d/mysqld start
That's the startup script that comes with the Fedora rpm.

Woops checked your post a little closer. You might want to also make sure that mysql-server is installed

Quote:
rpm -qa | grep mysql
