Cannot log on to Gnome Desktop - Hangs

Hi all,

I installed Fedora Core 5 on my Toshiba Equium A60 (No problems on install)
Setup a normail user and tried logging in. Now here is the problem:

Typing in my username - FINE
Typing in my password - FINE

Press Return

Screen switches to the loading screen with the icons saying loading "Window Manager" ect.

The system just hangs - no Mouse or Keyboard Response.

it hangs mainly on Loading window manager and Loading Nautilus

Root Also does the same.

I can load into Terminal fine.

Kernel Version is 2.6.15-1

I know the install disk image is fine as i loaded it on to VMWARE without failure.

Please help. 2 installs and still no joy.

Did you try to update your kernel?

I mean yum update kernel.

I finally fixed the problem with the following:

Code:

All i did was change the session to Teminal login.
Tried starting X with "STARTX"

It then threw a message stating that a session on Desktop 0 was already active. and to delete /tmp/.X0-lock or something like that.

So i used

"RM /tmp/.X0-lock"

Confirmed i wanted to remove it.

Then i started X with STARTX

Opened /etc/X11/xorg.conf and comented line "LOAD "GLX""

All worked fine after that.

and i have not noticed any difference in display quality.

I treid the YUM UPDATE KERNEL and YUM UPGRADE KERNEL

and got the following message at the end

"Nothing marked Upgrade/Obsolete"

Even though i know there is another kernel (2.6.17-1.2145_FC5)

so i used YUM install kernel and this ran fine but added two options to GRUB.

If i boot into the newer kernel i do not get any sound and no soundcard is detected.
