Cannot log into X as root
 

I realize that logging into the X server as root is not for everyday use and can be dangerous. That being said, it is sometimes easier to do sys admin work as root in a graphical environment when offline, etc.

Anyway, I am not sure why, but I can no longer log in from the GDM as root. In fact, I had not done it in a long time, but when I attempt now I get:

I am not out of disk space - not even close.

Anyway ... I tried reinstalling GDM, but still nothing.

I am beginning to think it's a problem with X.org. Some config file or start up script or something. I don't know. Any ideas would be most helpful.

Have you looked at your /tmp directory permissions. use chmod 777 /tmp to set it and then you will be able to log in as root.

I added the user 'sysadmin' with root privileges. and that seems to work ... and 'sys admin' uses 'root's' home directory. So, it seems that I now have 2 'roots'. Don't tell anyone from Australia this, or they will laugh!

Just looking at the permissions on the /tmp directory. It has rwx for both user and group, but has rwt for other. What is 't'?

User and group are both 'root' by the way.
