Cannot load Compiz/Emerald

I currently use Compiz and Emerald, this morning I found I could no longer start Emerald. When I enter "emerald --replace" into a terminal, the term just hangs and does not replace my window decorations.

This worked for me previously so it may be related to system updates I installed yesterday.

I executed fusion-icon from a terminal and I get the following output errors when trying to switch my window manager to compiz.

... executing: compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp --loose-binding
compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual
