Can Fedora run a Deb file?

I'm new to Linux, so bare with me. In order to get an internet connection with my ISP on a Linux, I have to download the software that they use. They have a deb file but my version, Fedora Core, doesn't seem to be able to read it. Is it possible to read it in this version?

In order to use a .deb file in Fedora (or any rpm base system) you'll have to use apt4rpm. This changes the .deb file to an rpm file which can then be installed. However if should not be necessary to use the ISP's software to get your internet running. My ISP does not have any linux packages yet with every distro I have installed it has worked, even when I was using dialup the ISP did not offer linux packages but I was able to set it up and use it quite well.

Here is more info.
http://apt4rpm.sourceforge.net/

There is specific info for how to setup apt4rpm on specific distros, however you did not mention which Fedora you are using.

Is there an easy way to find the version, I haven't had any luck in that area yet. I just installed the software this morning after purchasing the book "Linux for non-geeks" by Rickford Grant. The only thing the CDs says is that its based on the Fedora Core.
My ISP has a Linux version available but I don't think its possible to use it without the software. Unless you mean it can run the software under a windows version.

it looks like the book came with Fedora Core 1. Have a look here for further help, if you haven't already.

http://www.fedorafaq.org/fc1/

Here's another site that may be helpful.

http://www.reciprocalnet.org/network...guide/toc.html

Also since your ISP offers a .deb package of their software, I would consider getting Ubuntu (you can order the CD for free from their site here http://shipit.ubuntulinux.org/
and follow the the guide here http://ubuntuguide.org/ ) or Mepis which can be found here
http://www.mepis.org/
both distros are fairly easy to use and are more up to date than Fedora core 1 (although you can also order or download Fedora core 4, however it's a large download if your on dialup, which is why I suggested ordering the Ubuntu cd for free).
So check out the sites and your options.

If you install a package called "alien" you can convert various linux package formats to others. It's not guaranteed to work flawlessly.
