Can't open MPG media?

I installed Mplayer and for some reason I can see .wmv files but when I download .MPG files, I see them downloading via Firefox bu then the Mplayer never opens the file. It just sits there.

How can I point Mplayer to open .MPEG or .MPG files?

This is perhaps the most frustrating thing to me about Linux. I have Firefox installed and I have Mplayer installed but notbody talks to anybody in my OS. Its like the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing.

I don't save any files, I just open them and I see the Firefox download manager starting to open them and then nothing happens when it reaches 100%.

When I click a .wmv file, it opens via a "Mplayer" window, no questions asked.

When I try a .mpg file, nothing happens.

I goto Gnome > Preferences > File Types & Apps > Videos >

There I can see MPEG video is the 1st option.

When I double click that MPEG video, under actions, the default action is to use gmplayer. I then go to .wmv files and do the same thing and it has the same default action "gmplayer".

So what is wrong?
