Can't manage to start compiz fusion in fedora 7

Hi everyone!

Every time I tried to have a 3D desktop with Fedora I've never been lucky. Today, I decided to give Compiz-Fusion a try. I installed it by following this guide:

http://linuxbraindump.org/2007/08/30...on-on-fedora-7

Everything installs just fine but once I try to run fusion-icon or I click on Desktop Effects, all it does is automatically restart X Window and it doesn't activate the 3D desktop.

Somebody knows how to fix that?

My graphic card is NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430 and I installed kmod-nvidia.

Thanks for your time.

I just wanted to add also that I get the same result if I install Beryl and try to start Beryl Manager. X Window simply restarts and I don't get 3D desktop activated.

Setup the Livna repo http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/ by selecting the Fedora 7 repository rpm, then in a terminal type yum install kmod-nvidia.After the NVidia drivers are installed try using Compiz-Fusion or Beryl.

I did that already. That's the first thing I did before installing beryl or compiz fusion.

Yeah, if I thought more about the fact that you followed the example at linuxbraindump I wouldn't have posted what I did, since he says to do exactly the same thing.

Another thing that I would like to add is that when I go to:

System Tools > NVIDIA Display Settings

and I click on OpenGL/GLX Information, that too causes X to crash and it gets me back to the login screen.

Edit:
It also does the same thing if I type the command glxinfo in a terminal.

I've been looking through the Xorg.0.log and I found this:

Quote:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0): log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0): server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module. If
(EE) NVIDIA(0): you continue to encounter problems, Please try
(EE) NVIDIA(0): reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

So it looks like the nvidia driver is having trouble running the GLX module.

Also, there was the following before:

Quote:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): 32-bit ARGB GLX visuals require the COmposite extension.
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Disabling 32-bit ARGB GLX visuals.
So I went in the xorg.conf file to enable Composite, but after I rebooted the 32-bit ARGB GLX visuals were enabled but that didn't solve my problem; it still fails to initialize the GLX module.

I say that, yet I'm not even sure if I'm on the right track.

OK. Apparently I was on the right track and I think I solved my problem now, all thanks to this post:

http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/red...idia-card.html

Another clue in the Xorg.0.log file was the following lines:

Quote:
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.3.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.3
So what I did was:

Code:
cd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions

mv libglx.so libglx.so.backup

ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia/libglx.so.100.14.11 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
After a reboot, what I get now in Xorg.0.log is this:

Quote:
LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
Module class: X.Org Server Extension
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.1
(II) NVIDIA GLX Module 100.14.11 Wed Jun 13 18:58:58 PDT 2007
(II) Loading extension GLX
And X stopped crashing.

I now have Beryl installed and all that's left for me to do now is to figure out how that thing works.

Troubles with Beryl

OK, seriously, I'm having a hard time using Beryl. I installed it by following this guide here:

http://www.howtoforge.com/fedora7_beryl_compizfusion

I managed to make it work (sort of). I'm having some 3D effect but it's extremely buggy, like the cursor constantly disappearing, I'm unable to move the windows with the mouse, etc.

I did a test and checked what would happen if I type beryl in a terminal and here's what I get.

Code:
**************************************************************
* Beryl system compatiblity check *

Somebody has an idea?

Or maybe I would have more luck if I posted in the Beryl forum?

Case closed!

Alright. There's nothing more to say on that subject. Finally, I removed Beryl and gave Compiz Fusion a second change and for reasons that I can't explain, it's working fine. There are still a few bugs here and there but it's bearable.

As far as I'm concerned, the problems are solved and this case is closed.

Good night everyone!
