Bring up icons + top panel to desktop very slowly?

I am using Fedora 8,

Recently, after update some packages, and installed gDesklets, I noticed that:
+ Sometime, login process very slowly after I typed password
+ Bring up icons to Desktop slowly also
+ Sometime, my fullname don't appear on top panel

startup programs in Session (GNOME) include: gdesklets, power manager, pulse audio, software update notifier, volume manager.

Can anybody guest the reasons?

try installing KDE and see if kdm is faulty versus gdm (the login managers)

2) bring up icons to desktop means?

does this mean if you click on an icon the application is slow to load or
does it mean when the gnome starts....there is a gap to drawing the icons

eh? I thought gnome did not like icons...I am confused
