BlueCurve look corrupt after updating.

When I connect to my machine through VNC, the BlueCurve UI looks correct (window decorations, icons, etc). When I login to the machine directly, I see what looks more like the GNOME desktop.

Why do I get two different looks with the same login user? Does this have
anything to do with the fact that I did an update and now I have two
kernels listed on the boot screen? When I log in using VNC, the up2date
notification tells me that there is a new kernel and I should reboot to
switch to it. When I log in directly, I select that new kernel and get the
BlueCurve problem.
