Black screen after login

When I boot my laptop everything goes well until after I login. Once I enter my password the screen goes black with just a movable mouse curser.

I was running Fedora 37 up until middle of last week. I upgraded to 38. It went well for a day or 2 then I when I tried booting it up I was greeted with the black screen after login.

I am able with control+ALT+F keys to bring up the terminal. startx brings me to my desktop.

Would help if you said what kind of video hardware you had, although from your post in another similar threads, going to assume nVidia. Had a similar issue with openSUSE Tumbleweed, and blacklisting/removing a package related to the kmp-default kernel resolved it.

What nVidia packages do you have loaded? Can run "rpm -qa | grep -i nvidia" to find out. Also what kernel?

it looks like you still have the fedora 37 kmod-nvidia rpm installed

Ok, I am sorry, I am not new to Fedora but should I uninstall the kmod and reinstall or how do I update?

You remove it with "yum remove kmod-nvidia-6.3.8-100.fc37.x86_64-535.54.03-1.fc37.x86_64". And you've already got the F38 package installed.

Ok so I gave up and reinstalled Fedora 38. same issue so clearly it doesn't like something about my hardware. If you think it might matter the /home folder was reused.

Last time I booted up I was able to get this. It is well beyond my abilities to understand but someone might be able to decipher it.

Alright. This thread seems dead but for anyone else reading this with a similar problem. I discovered that I can't change my screen resolution. However if I change the scaling to auto feom 100% my issue disappears. Idk why or how to solve it but that fixes that issue. I say solve it as it doesn't scale great and my panels and some windows seem massive and out of scale but I can now log in and out without issue.
