Audio recording software - can't find /dev/dsp

I want to use streamer to record audio. (streamer comes as part of xawtv and runs from the command line). However, when I try to run it, I get the following output
Quote:
dsp-open: trying: oss...
oss: open /dev/dsp: No such file or directory
dsp-open: failed: oss
movie writer initialisation failed
If I look at /dev/, I can't see dsp either. What do I need to do to get the sound?

The frustrating thing is that I have made it work in the past.

I think you need alsa-oss which provides /dev/dsp
OSS is legacy now so if possible I would look for a recording tool which uses alsa instead.
