Audio in Linux 2.6 (FC2)
 

Hi,

I'm gaving problems playing music audio CD's on my newly installed FC2 box. I can play any other standard non-CD audio files such as Ogg. All audio programs capable of playing audio CD's can 'see' and play the audio CD, but no sound is coming through.

I would like to know how to do the following:

1. How do I determine my soundcard settings on Linux?

2. Why on the audio mixer is there both OSS, and ALSA?

3. Which of the afore mentioned (OSS or ALSA) does Linux use to play audio?

4. What is the difference between OSS and ALSA?

5. Any tips, pointers, direction, etc. that I can take to initiate the problem solving process.

Please help me. I would really like to listen to CD-audio on my Linux box, without having to rip everything to Ogg.

ALSA is the standard library for audio in the newer distros.You have both alsa and oss plugins to allow programs utilizing the OSS api to run on your system.Since you're using fedora,you probably have alsa as your default audio library.
OSS was used in earlier releases,but due to some licensing issues,it has given way to the much better ALSA lib.It's much better in the sense it supports a wider range of soundcards and audio interfaces,and gives a better performance.
Anyway,what program are you using to play the audio cd's?You probably need to adjust the cd audio volume settings using the alsa-mixer.

Audio playes in XMMS but not GNOME CD Player...

Okey, I got it to work in XMMS, but GNOME's default CD Player still doesn't make even as much as a bleep ... what could be the reason for this?

Why does XMMS work and GNOME CD Player not? Don't hey eventually play throught the same 'drivers'?

So now I have another few questions:

1. Where and how can I change the 'default' program that loads whenever I insert an audio CD.

2. How do I configure and change the GNOME CD Player's settings?

I think you need to set the permissions for the cd player.Try,
chmod a+r /dev/cdrom
.You can change the settings using the Preferences tab.
