atkbd.c "unknown keypress" errors

I have Fedora Core 3. This problem has occured in all kernels I have tried, including the latest one (2.6.11-1.27_FC3).

In text mode (no X server), I get random atkbd.c messages while typing. These messages do not appear when I'm running an X server. I am using a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard (USB).

The messages are all similar to this:

atkbd.c: unknown keypress (translated set 2, code 0xd9 on isa0060/ser0)
atkbd.c: use setkeycodes e059 <keycode> to make it known.

I tried setkeycodes e059 0xd9 (and any other codes that are mentioned), but I still get these messages.

I Googled but the only match I found was in the Gentoo docs:

Prior to 2004.3, when configuring the kernel for use on an eMachines Mobile Athlon64 laptop, you must compile USB support into the kernel. Otherwise, you will receive errors about an "unknown keypress' from atkbd.c. Disabling USB support does not work.

But my kernel mounts USB thumb drives, so I assume it has USB support. How do I fix this problem?

Lightbulb Suggested Solution

Here is a link to the article I used to fix this exact problem. I too have the microsoft wireless keyboard/mouse combo. The directions are pretty generic and DO work for fedora and redhat distros. Mind you, you say it does not show up in X...however, there is some stuff going on you don't see. Please read the article very carefully and do exactly what it says. Not only have I gotten rid of these codes, I've also mapped every single extra key to actually do something.

Good Luck!
