How do I install the ATI Drivers or FGLRX stuff so I can have 3d or proper resolution on FC5 ? I just installed and I have a X1600 PRO w/ Acer AL1916W (19" lcd/widescreen) I'm on 1280x1024 which is vesa and when the ati drivers are installed I should go into native res which is 1440x900 thanks
id' *really* strongly suggest using the yum repo at livna.org. they have ato and nvidia packages in there built specifically for each fedora kernel rpm. you can install them all manually, but this makes it really painless once you've added the repo.
I just did. install kmod-fglrx-smp and after I reboot it doesnt go into X or nothing .. it finishes the loading and stays in the background with the mouse cursor
doesn't sound like a driver problem if the server completes loading... how are you logging in? via console and then runnign startx? ensure you do a full yum update as i know a new version of gnome has been pushed out over the last week, might have picked up an inconsistency there if you're still using gnome... what if you try with a different user? does /var/log/Xorg.0.log say anything starting with (EE) ?
No I'm logging on default way. gdm
I had ran yum update, upgrade first.
I just reinstalled fc5 because I really want to use it.
I'm going to see what the Xorg.log says though
I was wondering maybe I can change something from Display settings, its shown as vesa, should I click on radeon or fglrx

hmm, ok not too great. Now those old logs are using the vesa driver, the most bog standard one-size-fits-all driver the x server has. you should be able to at least get a little bit of it working via the generic "radeon" driver that comes with xorg no? maybe your card is not supported by X properly... what happens if you just directly replace the "vesa" setting in the device scetion for "radeon" or "fglrx" ?
Googling around gives a few pags to be interested in:
Well, all the livna stuff is installed, i ran /usr/sbin/ati-fglrx-config-display enable 3d rendering was good, but still no proper resolution, so when i rebooted (having fglrx in Driver section in my xorg.conf) i just get a black screen after everything loads. this is my second fc5 install, i add 1440x900 to my xorg.conf works fine, reboot load up normally black screen, alt ctrl f1 dont work, reboot boot up into 3, login in as root, type gdm, X works good wow the distro that i want doesnt work for me =\
I'm getting the same problem with a Radeon Mobility 9000.
I would have a go at manually installing the ATI drivers but apparently this isn't recommended as FC5 is using Xorg 7.
Thing is, it did work with kernels upto 2.6.16-1.2111 (which are no longer installed on my laptop) but no matter what, the livna kmod-flgrx with the Xorg fglrx driver will not work for kernels 2.6.16-1.2222 & 2.6.16-1.2333. I just get a black screen, and can't even switch over to tty1 to login.
The only way around this for me is to do an interactive boot, say no to loading flgrx. This takes me to the blue screen with a mouse cursor, then I can Ctrl+Alt+BkSpc to reboot X and login to GNOME or a console (to uninstall fglrx or change the driver back to 'radeon' in xorg.conf)
BTW Acid - The Suse link you posted wouldn't work in FC5 as Xorg 7 could be hosed by a full fglrx install as you would on other distros, although future versions of ATI's installer will take this into account.
I had a go at commenting out Load extmod from xorg.conf as in your 2nd link, no difference.
same here dude .. same exact stuff..
I tried with regular kernel and smp kernel
I also tried the ati prop which is not recommended and i couldnt find /usr/X11R6/bin/ati* to run aticonfig --initial so thats not even a go
Noxious obviously thinks we're all too dumb to use Google.
If you read the posts, the RPM installation and the disabling of SELinux is already being done here so Stanton Finley's guide ain't going to help.
Just for your info chaps, I brought back my old default xorg.conf, switched back to kernel 2.6.16-1.2122 (i686) and installed the older kmod-fglrx-8.24.8-3.2.6.16_1.2122_FC5.i686.rpm & xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-8.24.8-3.lvn5.i386.rpm rpms found here.
Tried manually changing the driver from radeon to fglrx in xorg.conf, and have tried running ati-fglrx-config-display enable....
Same problem, hmm

Same problem, hmm
you should try
ati-fglrx-config-display enabledri
and make sure that kernel module correctly installed
/sbin/lsmod | grep fglrx
If nothing happens, then manually load kernel module:
/sbin/modprobe fglrx
and try the step above.
There should be some info regarding your driver.
After that change your xorg file and make sure to comment
Load "glx" --to--> # Load "glx"
