apt-get wont download anything :(

I just finished installer Fedora Core 1 on a friend's computer (introducing him to linux) and was going to go and show him how amazing yum and apt-get are, except neither of them would even work!
I was able to get yum working after changing the mirror (server problems maybe?), but apt-get is still no good

This is all i get, no matter what package i try:

$apt-get install mplayer
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package mplayer

Any help appreciated.

You need to find the specific package name. Try this:
apt-cache search mplayer

You can then install the correct package name
