Appalling system performance(FC1,2.6.1)
 

hi all,
i've finally ironed out all the bugs in my fedora system, like dvd playback, getting my hardware installed properly, etc etc.
one problem that is REALLY getting on my nerves though(apart from the hideously slow boot time...why is fedora the SLOWEST distro?) is the mp3 playback.
i've installed the proper libs, and i'm using gstreamer and rhythmbox built from sources. playing an mp3 and doing just about ANYTHING with the system causes the music to skip constantly until the other task is completed. even something like workspace switching causes a jump sometimes. or even installing a very small program through YUM causes this.

i have got the preempt option enabled in the kernel, and dma is on on my drives. is there anything else i can do to improve things? i swear im this close *holds out finger and thumb about 1cm apart* to quitting fedora and going to SuSE. the performance under load is terrible.

i'd hate to have to use this thing on my server!

Was the performance this bad before you upgraded your kernel? Have you checked to see if anything is aking up large amounts of processor time? You can use system monitor for that or type ps aux at the command line or type top.

Mine works fine, but I'm not using the new kernel...I'm going to wait and see what the stock kernel is like with Fedora 2...do a process check, as recommended above and make sure that you don't have any shell processes going in the background. After a few software upgrades and things, I have noticed that every now and then, the shell is busy doing something unless I log off and log back on, or kill the process, whatever it was doing.

But I have been very happy with the performance...and DVD playback is good too, and that is usually a pretty good indicator of performace...could be something wrong with the kernel you put in? If you have a spare from before of the 2.4 variety, try booting with that one and compare the performance.
