All In Wonder 2006 AGP - Best Install Method for FC5

Okay, googling, etc. has turned up about 59752957982352975982 ways to integrate ATI support into Fedora. I'm wondering which is the "best". By "best" I mean:
  • Gives me the best 3D accelleration, using my card to its full potential
  • Lets me change my refresh rate to the maximum supported by my monitor, which is detected correctly by Fedora
  • Gives me any hope of being able to use all the great inputs/outputs my AIW card has (RCA, S-Video, DVI, etc.) This isn't to say they aren't working now; I haven't tried yet.

I'm opening up a long-winded can of worms here, but any help/pointing in the right direction would be swell. I'm more than willing to do the "footwork", but I'd rather not just shoot around in the dark...

Thanks all.

Well, that was weird... after running ATI's proprietary setup program (which seemed risky, as it didn't specificially mention FC5 as supported), it did its install okay... then asked me to backup my XOrg.conf, which I did. Then I had to run 'aticonfig' in terminal... running this produced a verbose setup guide, which included the verbatim strings to be entered for certain setups. I'm currently running just single monitor, single video card (boo hoo), so the setup string was fairly straightforward... after configuration, I performed the recommended restart.

XOrg went nuts, saying that no drivers were available, it couldn't open shared objects from file, and nuclear devices were being detonated in underground bunkers in rural China. Fortunately, XOrg is a smart little server, and created a fresh, shiny new .conf file, moving the old one.

So I'm up and running, though how much of my new driver's support I have remains to be seen. I can now set the monitor to my maximum supported refresh rate, and an object "ATI Control" is in my K Menu. Opening it results in the task starting, doing nothing, then quitting.

EDIT: I decided to run it in terminal:

Code:

[Ron@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@localhost ~]# fireglcontrolpanel
fireglcontrolpanel: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.s
o.1: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied

Why is it calling up a firegl control panel? I thought firegl was a different architecture ATI video card?

Also, the system still says I have the Radeon 9600, as it originally detected before all this fun (Radeon 9600 != AIW 2006).

So, I'll keep tinkering, and when I have something good, I'll post it here, and see if we can get this card moved to the HCL :]

I also tried the method in the sticky at the top of this forum. It pretty much yielded the same results, except the ati control center now works, just without any functionality. It only says everything is unknown. This makes sense, as I am now using a different driver.

So...

Any thoughts of any kind, any one?

thank you RA

in my other post you posted and I'll drop some of th ethings I figured out. One, a updated kernel is needed for the drivers to advance. Two, livna drivers are better (right now) than ATI own drivers. three, if you install livna drivers after update you can get as close as having drivers with higher desktop res and so on with no problems but when you change drivers in xorg or look for probe modules you ain't going to get far.

I had a idea to recompil the kernel with no ATI modules support or kernel then probe the module to see if that will help my video card.

Thanks for the tips. I'm currently using Livna's drivers.

Let me know how the recompile works out.
