2 small problems

whenever i reboot my pc and log into gnome, the PCM slider in the volume control is always set to 0, meaning i have to change it when i listen to music.
my soundcard used the emu10k alsa driver i think.

another thing, when i log in, my "windows" drive appears on the desktop. when i open it, i dont have permissions to view the files, so i have to chown -R the whole dir so my user account can see them.

how can i make these changes stick, even after a reboot?

thanks for reading, all.
