Password appears not being saved (using USB drive)

Hello,

I've just 'installed' Feather Linux. I booted it using a floppy drive and a USB drive.

My problem is, setting the password AND saving it. When I run Feather Linux and open a terminal I see I'm logged in as user 'knoppix'. With passwd I can't change it because it asks me for 'the old password'. But there isn't an old password, as far as I know. Haven't typed any password. However, it appears I succeed in changing the password for user 'root'. Except it isn't being saved, because when I execute, for example, 'su', I don't have to type any password.

Does anybody have any experience with this?

Feather Linux (or Fluxbox?) looks kind of cool with the default style, by the way.

so you don't have to use a password for 'su' when you are the user knoppix??

You mean the Knoppix user has superuser priviliges? Hadn't thought of that. But the fact still remains I can't change the password of this Knoppix user, supposedly because I don't know the old password (actually it doesn't have a password). But never mind.

Anyway, after installing Feather Linux onto my harddrive I could change the root password. At least, that's what I remember. My memory isn't as good as I want it to be.

When I got tired of Feather Linux I installed SimplyMEPIS to the same partition as Feather Linux, effectively DESTROYING it

Well, I still have a copy on my USB drive.

maybe you should have tried doing "su -"

the "-" loads the profile. then you could to "passwd knoppix"

ah well too late.
