How do you configure Midnight Commander?
 

Hi,

I just love DNALinux. The one thing that scared me was that when they asked to to put in ./myip and when I did that. It instructed me to go and enter mc. Then it said something like configuring and saving when finished to a floppy disk or CD. Well I entered mc and that was what scared me. I saw I had to configure Midnight Commander, I think that is what it was. I need some advise on how to do this because I do not want to damage the program. I had to play some music to calm me down. I never configured anything in my whole life. Could you help me? I really love the Linux program because I feel that it is more securer than Microsoft. I really hate Microsoft. I have used StarOffice 5.2 application suite and I am currently using OpenOffice's Short-cut buttons. I love these programs very much and
I know that they could also work on Linux programs. Please do help me, I don't want to damage the program and have to burn it on CD again.

I don't think you need to worry. Even if you totally screwed up Midnight Commander, you could always re-install it and it would be as good as new. I don't know why you were asked to "configure" it, since it comes set with options that will be usable by most people. But if you want to "tweak" it you just run Midnight Commander (command is "mc" without the quotes) and under "Options" is "Configuration." I've never bothered with it in almost three years and I use it many times a day.

Since you are a relatively new user of Linux, I hope you know you should not log in as the root user. You will see this advice many places here and elsewhere, but it bears repeating. It is very easy to mess up your system if you're operating as the root user. Some things you have to do as root, but as soon as you're done doing them, go back to being the regular user. The regular user does not have permission to do some of the deadly things root can do.

Since you enjoy OpenOffice.org office suite, you might like to go into the "options" and "configure" panels (under the "tools" menu heading) and play around with configuring it different ways. Make a note of what you do so you can put it back the way it was if you don't like the results you get.

That would be a good way to become more at ease with configuring programs.

A good program is set up so that it's very hard to "damage" it. After a while you'll enjoy being able to make things look and act the way YOU want.

I am using a computer at the college library. It may be the computer that I am using. It is very interesting. It is allowing me to boot and everything, so that is the good thing. I love how much faster that DNALinux is. I am very happy to have download this and place it on my CD. Do you think that the computer may have something to do with what I am experiencing? If I have to configure it before using will the help button help? I don't want to get into help and not
be able to get out of help.

I certainly do wish you luck. Glad you're enjoying DNALinux. I'll have to go read about it.

There's no help button in my version of Midnight Commander... Maybe you're referring to something in the interface your DNALinux is presenting you. Anyway, I've never ruined anything by using a "help" function since I started using personal computers in about 1989. I say go ahead and experiment; you can always reboot!

I don't understand your problem. Could you please tell me the steps to reproduce it? I don't know where it ask for "yourip". Are you using DNALinux Desktop or BlastonCD?

I have the Blast the live CD. Do I download the regular first then the Blast Live CD? How do I get both of these on the CD-RW? Please help me.

I did Blaston CD. Should I also try the DNALinux Deskto also. I am at a computer that is very secure. It is at a college. Please help me. Thank you,
