xstart


i have installed Gnome on my system but can not get xstart to load. i know this is a stupid question but i have searched everywhere for the answer. i am running an nvidia 4400 Ti. i tried the yelp command and could not load any video.

Welcome to LQ!

Do you mean the command "startx" which starts the X server?

ok so i have made some progress but now i am getting

X: cannot stat /etc/X11/X (no such file or directory), aborting.
giving uo
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to conect to X server
xinit: No such proces (errno 3): Server error

hope this helps

This means you don't have X installed.
First, install X
Then,
dpkg-configure xserver-xfree86

You will need all the info for your display (graphics card type, resolution of the screen, etc.).

Remember, gnome is a desktop environment which uses X to be displayed. If X is not there, gnome is of no use.

And you can install the Xserver by doing a "apt-get install xserver-xfree86" - as root of course. The do the dpkg-reconfigure mentioned above.
