These are the steps which I follwed :

debian #~ dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

4) Video cards bus identifier - None
5) Amount of memory(in KB) for video memory - 4096
6) Frame buffer device interface? - Yes
7) X Key Board rule set - xfree86
8) KeyBoard Model - pc104
9) Keyboard layout - us
10) keyboard variant - none
11) keyboard options - none
12) mouse port - /dev/ttyS0
13) mouse driver - MouseMan
14) emulate 3 button mouse? No
15) Scroll events? No
16) Identifier for Monitor - New monitor
17) LCD device - No
18) Xwindow GUI Characteristics: Medium - 800x600 @ 60 hz
19) Video Mode - 800x600 and 640x480
20) Bit colour = 24 bit
21) Xserver modules to be loaded - All modules selected expect the

Hmmm. I can see that your monitor isnīt correctly configured. Try to find the manual or specs for the monitor and find the vsync and hsync settings. IF this doesnīt help do the following:

cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.bak (backup your current config)

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

This will reconfigure your X server. When asking for monitor setup choose medium and use a small setting (e.g. 1024x768 @ 60hz). IF this works, then edit the config file and work the way up until it hits the wall or till youīre satisfied.

Btw: which port does your mouse sit @? IF itīs the PS/2 then your mouse port should be /dev/psaux . X wonīt run if it canīt find the mouse.

Good luck with your config.

LiveCDs like Knoppix and Morphix are great tools for fixing X configuration problems.

At first boot to LiveCD, then mount your Debian partition as root from the LiveCD and use a file manager to move the autoconfigured /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 from LiveCD to Debian. Or you can write down the specs from LiveCD's XF86Config-4 and then boot to Debian and run 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86'.

It's always good to have a LiveCD around, in case you mess something in your main system. Personally I prefer Morphix LightGUI (that comes with XFCE) because it needs less RAM but if you are more familiar with KDE, go with Knoppix.

Knoppix can be started in text mode or with other available desktops. Check out the "cheatcodes" on their website.
I just ran text mode Knoppix on a Pentium 100 with 32MB RAM yesterday.

Yeah, you can do that. I just happen to like like XFCE4.

Actually, I also use QtParted from SystemRescueCD to partition new HDDs. It also comes with GAG bootloader that I like.

This is the problem... when you reconfigure the xserver deselect the high resolution (also try a low color depth) options, and verify what are the refresh rates supported by your monitor.
