Xorg very sluggish

Hi there,

I've been all over google seeking a solution to my problem but without any luck, so I'm hoping I may get a solution here. Anyhow, the problem is what the title says. To start, I'll provide some hardware & software specifications.

CPU: 1.7 GHZ Celeron
RAM: 512 DDR
Video: 256MB ATi Radeon 9550
OS: Debian Sarge
Kernel: 2.6.20

I have the ATI Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver 8.36.5 installed and both OpenGL and DRI seem to be working correctly.

fglrxinfo
Code:

OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon 9550 / X1050 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6458 (8.36.5)

glxinfo | grep direct
Code:

direct rendering: Yes
I've ran glxgears and the FPS is horrible.

glxgears -printfps
Code:

2621 frames in 5.0 seconds = 523.671 FPS
2785 frames in 5.0 seconds = 556.174 FPS
2749 frames in 5.0 seconds = 548.710 FPS
2819 frames in 5.0 seconds = 563.351 FPS

However, this varies from low 100's to 600's (sometimes even 1k+ but rare).

xorg.conf - http://oink.ws/xorg.conf.txt

Xorg.0.log - http://oink.ws/Xorg.0.log.txt

If anyone can provide a little assistance, that would be excellent.

Thanks.

debian sarge as stable has been replaced with etch as stable. why not upgrade to etch and get back....if i remember correctly, sarge as stable use XF86Free and not xorg as well as the 2.6.8 kernel. you are running a mixed system and that could be the cause.....my fps with glxgeas in 2289

Shortly after making this thread I had the same thoughts, so I wen't ahead and upgraded to Debian Etch, and what do you know? Desktop is nice and speedy. Only thing that's really sluggish now is firefox, but I can expect that.

Thanks :)
