XOrg - Another "Screens found but none have ..."-problem, Modeline ignored?
Good afternoon.
TY for opening this thread in the first place. There are so many of these on the web that I have consulted myself. Listen... I just present you the facts and you tell me where I have failed. Or not.
I am writing in vim and the formatting aids are not at my disposal. I try to indicate the sections with console output with dashes.

So this is an old computer, bought second hand or so, by a friend of mine who hopes to get rid of the hacked Windows XP that someone had the nerve to install. So far, I can assure that nothing is left of the illegally installed system.
Oh. And we are in France. Tell me if any of the variables and values need translation to English.
-----------
~# lsmod | grep r128

Cool. Nothing. I am genuinly surprised, as this is the first time that this happens...
Okay. This should be okay, I guess ..?!
I have written a modeline in the xorg.conf file, either generated by videogen or the other tool that I forgot the name of.., anyway, the monitor has complained that it receives a signal for 70Hz while it wants 1280x1024 and 60Hz.
The modeline is
------------------
Modeline "1280x1024" 60.0 1280 1320 1344 1640 1024 1026 1029 1078 # 60 MHz , 36.6 kHz, 33.9 Hz
------------------
I think I cannot attach a file to this first posting, but do not want to insert the complete xorg.conf file at this moment. I will join it at the bottom, instead. Here is the relevant section from the log-output after my current attempt to startx:

One reason for my inclusion of the derived modelines in the output above is my desire to exclude them. I tried that with some options in the xorg.conf file (see below), but without effect.
Replacing the rage driver by vesa allows me to start XOrg, but with the almost expected result of an unusable, blurred interface.
The Framebuffer device is not available. This, too, astonished me, but I have not often had an ATI chip, myself.
Some of you have already gone through this kind of error-description a few times and some many times... I hope it will not bore you to scrutinize this xorg.conf files for obvious errors or to point me at another way to get X running.
Okay then... I announced the file. Here it comes. I say thank you and run... and will be running my own machine a little...

The Rage 128 is last millennium. It may be fussy about interrupts (try irq 12) Give it the radeon oss or vesa drivers, and naybe a vesa node (e.g. 1924x768). Once you hace a picture, tune away.
As for quality, it's not good enough to be given away in breakfast cereal boxes.

Thank you, the interrupts had been an issue once back on SuSE 6.4, I remember... with a sound blaster or something. I will try that again on the rage 128. And also the other hints. Else, I will look out for a cheep replacement if the chip is not onboard (haven't even checked, yet).
That is what the French might say to express something like: There is a chance that, one of these days, I may choose to just [something else] dump this crap.
And you will be surprised to read it in modern German : * it!.
Thank you for the contributions to this discussion as to all those which treat the same phenomenon in other threads on the Web and in Usenet... Most of those exchanges end by just not being continued.
Additional Post-Omega information... or define resurrection.
I (not virtually) cried about my fate to yet another one of my wife's awesome uncles. He just asked: What is a graphics-card ?
A few days later would that help? and he handed me an unidentifiable PC-card with no name on it. Wait - that is an AGP connector. The computer identified it as a quite old NVidia GeForce FX thingy. Needless to say, I succeeded and made the X-server run... admittedly in Vesa-Mode. But my friend is happily hammering away on her nouveau machine.
