Hi, this is my first linux install and i have everything working except Beryl, i installed beryl following this guide but it didnt worked, direct rendering wasnt working, so i installed ati's propietary drivers, but they only work with XGL, and i cant manage to install it and make it work...
im using a 2.6.18 kernel, an etch/lenny hybrid and ati 8.36.5 drivers.
running beryl --test-only returns:
Code:
slimshady@localhost:~$ beryl --test-only

Evidently AIGLX will work with some ATI cards using the open-source radeon driver (see this Sabayon Linux wiki entry, for example). As a matter of fact, a good way to tell if the radeon driver + AIGLX will work with your graphics card would be to download the Sabayon live CD and run it.
There's a Gentoo wiki article that shows how to enable AIGLX in your xorg.conf file here.
You don't want XGL on Debian. It's unsupported and unmaintained, and thus, very buggy.
I have a laptop with an ATI Mobility 200M chipset. I have to use XGL to use compiz or beryl (it's too slow with the radeon driver), so I installed openSUSE on it. They invented and still maintain XGL. I'd much rather have Debian on it, though.
If nothing else works, and you've just got to have your eye candy, get an nvidia card.
