XF86Config-4 + squished screen problem

running debian sid
just installed nvidia drivers.

when x starts for the first time, the display is compressed horizontally into the left side of the screen.
if i jump to a tty and back, it's all fine.
i've had this on other distros before too, but i only fixed it out of dumb luck.

does anyone know what causes this.
(it's an lcd display with a dvi connection if that matters)
