X11 doesn't use Xsession

i wanted to make some applications start after my X server starts, but i realized that there is no ~/.Xsession file. i've created it and written the following line into it:

/usr/bin/gkrellm &

as far as i know now after starting, X server should run gkrellm. but i does not. has anyone idea what's wrong?

If you don't use xdm/gdm or whatever, these things should be in your .xinitrc file.
