x server refresh prob using riva tnt card

hi

i'm using the testing with custom kernel 2.6.10. i tried to get my riva tnt card running under x server, but it won't work. i downloaded the latest nvidia drivers (6629) from their website, removed the nv module from kernel config (# CONFIG_FB_RIVA is not set) and recompiled. i also applied the neccessary changes to my XF86Config-4. all done without any errors so far... now, x server starts up, shows login screen etc but the screen won't refresh. any clou? TIA.
