X Login to a blank screen with the mouse

I recently installed Debian on a machine for running MythTV (not installed yet), and upgraded to the unstable version. Upon reboot, I could not get X to start, so I ran aptitude and fixed the dependencies I was missing.

Upon the next reboot, I get the GNOME login, but when I login, it goes to a blank screen with the mouse. I've left it that way for about 20 minutes just to see if it will continue loading, but to no avail?

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

if your mouse cursor is an X, then it sounds like you've just got an empty X-server running, with no window manager. maybe you just have gdm installed? I'm just guessing on this one though.
