Won't start KDM

It won't start the kdm.

nothing happens when I type kdm as root and it doesn't start automatically either.

It worked once, and I installed openoffice.org and mozilla-firefox but the next reboot it just cannot go into kdm, and I don't know why.. when I login as root and type kdm nothing happens.. with xdm it seams to try loggin in, but kills itself again..

I tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and kdm is set to kdm and not xdm.(as i usually do) I go to xserver-xorg and sets it correctly, but when I do it, it says that xserver-xorg are already there and making a backup instead, I dont know why I cannot change this.

can anyone help me ?? I would really like to join my kde again..

Try as a normal user not as a root. Never start KDE or X Windows as a root, in fact it is not safe to do so.

Try apt-get install --reinstall kdm to get it back to its default settings then it should start automatically for you each time you boot.
