wireless wont connect sid ibm T61

hello im running debian unstable (sid) on my T61
i'm using the intel binary based drivers "ipw3945" for my intel 3945ABG wifi card, dhcpclient 3.0.6.dfsg-1 and nm-applet 0.6.5.
i have a problem connecting to unencrypted access points.
its the weirdest thing ever - i manage to connect fine to some, but to most , it just wont connect at all!
i tried using different drivers (the iwlwifi ones), but it doesn't seem to make a difference at all!
when i boot my vista up i connect just fine to those networks using the IBM Access Connections software.
what's wrong and how can i fix this??

p.s. - i didn't get around to using the wifi-tools to connect directly from terminal yet, though i will try once i get around to it.

HELP!
