windows debian installation

Can I install debian on a system by booting through CD
and then mount a windows drive in another machine in the network
and install?

The problem is though I can boot from the CDROM drive, during installation, it fails to mount the CD ROM drive

Apache web server is available in windows computers.

So the problem is it's not able to see the CDROM drive part way through the install.. Is this a SATA CDRom by chance ?

Have you tried using the etchnhalf CD to install from, or the Debian Lenny install ? Either of those do a much better job at hardware detection and may resolve your CDROM issue.

Debian Lenny (Testing)

It is not SATA
It is a very old IBM tower type PIII machine. I think the drive speed is very low

I see this is a duplicate of a thread you started earlier.. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...debian-700545/

have you tried either of the newer versions of Debian to see if they would resolve your issue ?

Could also be defective media or Defective CDROM drive.

yes farslayer

not yet tried the later versions

But I don't think anything wrong with CD drive because I can Install windows from the CD drive. Also I have changed 2 more Drives ( not new ) - the same problem.

Yes the problem solved

It is the problem with DMA The link provided by farslayer in my previous thread led me to success.

But I could'nt install the full system. I have done only the base system with no desktop
I think that the /etc/rc* directories are not there

Shall I make it manually?

the base system would include the rc directories..

To install the desktop

aptitude update
aptitude install gnome-core
(or xfce4, or lxde, or whatever desktop you want.. )

Yes it is there (rc directories)

I have done the complete gnome background

also set the samba server

windows users can access the samba share (security = user)and copy files from that share

but when I tried to copy a file from windows to the shared samba folder, access denied
the permission on the shared directory is rwx for owner.

Is it necessary to share the folder via nfs?
