window manager: XFWM or XFWM4 with GNOME?
 

Hi,

I'd like to use xfwm or xfwm4 with GNOME.

REASON:
xfwm(4) is a light window manager, lighter than sawfish I assume,

and for instance I would like to be able to resize / move the windows without having them refreshed all the time (because it costs CPU).

I cannot figure out how to do that :(

gnome uses metacity, not sawfish any more (who knows why the sawfish menus are still in the gnome advanced menu??)
and it really doesn't want you to change that. in fact, metacity is really hard to kill. and gnome since the last two versions has removed the 'use a different window manager' option.

i think what you have to do is choose a different window manager from your login screen (have to work out how to add them to the GDM options) and then start the gnome panel which will run on top of your other window manager. which is probably what you really want.

This doesn't apply to my config.
I have apt-get remove-d metacity and apt-get install-ed sawfish (for experimentation).
So I can assure you I'm using sawfish. :o
Yes, it's a shame in my opinion.
Seems to be a good idea to experiment.
And you made me find out the existence of gnome-panel.
