Someone will no doubt have an answer to your mplayer problem. Otherwise have you tried Xine?

Regards.

Perhaps "apt-get install xine-ui". I think you need to obtain some plugins in order to play encrypted dvd's though, see http://xinehq.de/index.php/faq#AEN201.

Add the sources listed on this great resource to your sources.list and be happy:
http://debian.video.free.fr/

mplayer can be installed from here.

I'd suggest VLC. It supports DVD Menus. It plays just about any media file that you throw at it.
This page http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-debian.html tells how to install it in Debian.

I'll second drj000's recommendation for VLC. Try launching it with svlc instead of just vlc to get a nicer looking UI.

I have encountered the same problem as you.But I solved it with "apt-get install w32codecs".And now
totem issues not only sounds but also pictures.
But you must find a site that has w32codecs.deb.
