Why Debian?

Hi guys, please share why you chose Debian as your distro? Thanks! :)

Also anyone here is confused when you tried debian because your first distro is rpm base? lol. Share some stories! thanks!

I dumped Debian , too much bloat and systmD and went back to Slack, and whatever other Independent distro is out there that I want to check out, and use, currently it's Solus.

I use a systemd free version called AntiX, Debian still offers the most packages of any Linux. :)

debian stable is the sort of reliable, unbreakable workhorse i need for my server.
it's actually oldstable now - jessie.

I run Sid because Debian tends to be very consevative regarding updating software and libraries and I like mine to be fairly recent.
Slackware is a great distribution but since I tend to reinstall now and again for whatever reason, or just install on a new PC, I found the install process for things like Steam looked too much work -- I'm too much of a slacker ;).
I would not recomend Debian over Slackware, unless you're lazy like me, but I would recommend it over its many derivatives.
Fedora I don't use because, while I was learning Linux, it had some severe dependency issues. I understand, and from what I have tried, that's gone now but I've not, yet, seen a reason to move to Fedora.

I run it because it generally just works, is reliable, and has sufficient repos for my tastes.

It's funny because that's the EXACT reason I avoided Fedora for years. And yes, that's gone now. Although given I like to run a little of everything, definitely there is no good reason (IMO) to choose Fedora over Debian. With the backports repo you will have decent enough new software in Debian and not have to reinstall every 9 months to upgrade to the newest version (Fedora releases are support till the day of release +1, ie- 25 was supported until the day 27 was released, 26 will be supported till the day 28 is released).

Cuz I am rpm dyslexic. All rawhide ever did was give me a rawhide.

But that was back in 2009. Things are better now. I remember back then how the Linux forums were swamped with rpm threads.

Debian has long been my second-favorite distro after Slackware mostly, because it is rock-solid. The breadth of software in the Debian repos is also a plus. Right now, I'm running it on that other computer, over there.-------->

I run Sid for the same reasons 273 mentioned.

I don't use Debian straight-up these days, but did quite extensively in the past. Since it now uses "that" init, it's off my list. Right now I do have both MX Linux and antiX on different boxes.

I thought this was a good article, from last week:

Large repos
Ease of use (apt-get) - parent of ubuntu, on which I cut my teeth in linux
Cutting edge software with Sid

Gave Debian up after systemd, but came back with antiX-17

Went to Salix because of a) systemd concerns, and b) the slapt-get's similarity to apt-get and Slackware stability; (also because of being a lazy slacker)

urpmi -- burp me!

More developers use Debian( old statistics, maybe now: based on Deb (like most distros))...

personally tho more stuff works/sid. :hattip:

sudowtf 01-13-2018 11:20 AM

I chose Debian because i got used to ubuntu/apt/aptitude/deb-repositories but got tired of *buntu's changes and bloat. I admin RHEL servers at work, but still prefer Debian Stable +XFCE +backports on my workstations & notebook.

273 01-13-2018 11:26 AM

Oh, and I forgot, when I somehow managed to bork my system completely some helpful person on Debian IRC channel talked me through the solution. I got some help there with another more minor issue too -- good people.

I first ran Debian back at 4.0 (Etch). I've always liked the package management system, and generally good dependency resolution. If and when things break I'm able to find a solution. I'm currently happily running Debian 9 on two laptops. Debian has always been a stable, robust distro for me.
I also run Slackware on 4 work stations. Slackware is also stable and robust. I dual boot Slackware and OpenBSD on one work station. OpenBSD has rock-like stability, security, and is very robust.
