You may need to install X first. Try:
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install x-window-system
apt-get install kde
The situation you describe looks like a bug in the installer I encountered some months ago - maybe you have an older version of the netinst installer? - this bug should have been fixed by now.

Anyway the actions above have fixed it for me, and actually I think it's best doing it that way = making a base install and then installing applications one by one according to one's needs.
