I do understand that, never questioned it, however I am telling you that I have booted a 64 bit image on a Pentium 4 HT at work. I don't know why, and I haven't filed it as a bug yet. And I have checked to ensure it was a 64 bit image I was using that was written to the USB stick.

Many Pentium 4's can be 64 bit. I am using one right now (3.4GHz "cedar mill").

Still no luck.

Since wheezy stable came out this morning (great!) I did a reinstall with it, namely
debian-7.0.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso

I had the files iwlwifi-6000g2a-5.ucode and iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode ready on a stick this time but the installation asked for iwlwifi-6000g2a-6.ucode which isn't in
firmware-iwlwifi_0.36+wheezy.1_all.deb Not sure how relevant that is.

Still cannot get to mirrors. Tried a couple of UK mirrors and then Chicago, thinking they'd still be asleep. No luck.

So I got an installation as before with no internet access. So I did what descendant command says (thanks!) and my /etc/network/interfaces is now

Code:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
and ran /etc/init.d/networking restart but no change, even after reboot.

For the record, the interfaces file before changes was

Code:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet static
	address 192.168.1.101
	netmask 255.255.255.0
	network 192.168.1.0
	broadcast 192.168.1.255
	gateway 192.168.1.254
	# dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package, if installed
	dns-nameservers 212.23.3.100 212.23.6.100
Not sure what to try next.

Right then, back to basics. First, establish if you actually have an internet connection:
Code:
ping -c 5 173.194.73.100
This pings one of the Google servers. The output doesn't really matter, as long as it has at least one successful packet transmitted. If it does, your internet connection is working. If it's not, the issue is on your machine (non-working interface I'd suggest)

If you can ping Google, but cannot connect to a website your problem may be the DNS. Try the ping command again, but replace the IP address with google.com instead. If that fails, DNS is the cause. Report your findings, we'll go from there.

Also, post the output of the following commands, as root:
Code:
ifconfig -a
iwconfig -a

Thanks Dutch Master, I've put these below but (embarrassment, shame) I just discovered I can start up wifi through the menu. So I have now got internet access. I'm still puzzled why eth0 doesn't work though...

ping:

I notice your eth0 interface is "hijacked" by avahi. Remove it if you have no need for it (but it may cause broken packages on your system!), it may release eth0.

Anyway, now that you have connectivity, update your system asap (if you haven't done so by now)

Again, many thanks. I hadn't heard of avahi (not a social media person) and find the concept alarming. But removing it through synaptic apparently removes gnome as well, which is drastic. So I suppose I will live with it for a while.

I'm actually not sure how to update the system, except by refreshing from synaptic. Too many years with ubuntu I guess. (I did use RH in the distant past.) I'm downloading my usual stuff but probably some things were lost because of installing only from one dvd.

try this to see if networks are available as you already have an internet address on wlan0
Quote:
iwlist scan wlan0
rfkill list all

This will do the trick, as root:
Code:
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
But Synaptic works OK too.

On avahi: it may have a string of dependencies that ultimately kill off Gnome, but by following the trail and en/disabling individual packages you may find a workable solution. Requires time to do properly though!

Thanks. I didn't know anything about these commands.

(Had to do iwlist wlan0 scanning)

You have wireless, all you need to do is click on wireless icon on menu bar select your wireless network & it will prompt for encryption key.
Also there are no blocks on wireless card.
Is 1 of the 2 wireless access point showing yours?
