where is the nameserver configuration?

I tried installing gnome-desktop, which wiped out /etc/resolv.conf (and ultimately failed to install). A comment was left in resolv.conf saying "do not edit..".

Where is the proper place to list nameservers in debian?

Ignore the "Do not edit" and just put the nameserver information back in.

Something's overwritten the file and it's telling you not to bother manually editing because it will overwrite it again in the future.

If you have a static setup then you can add a lines to the relevant interface in /etc/network/interfaces
Code:
iface eth0
 address 192.168.0.200
 network 192.168.0.0
 netmask 255.255.255.0
 broadcast 192.168.0.255
 dns-nameservers 11.22.33.44 55.66.77.88
 dns-search foo.org bar.com
See /usr/share/doc/resolvconf/README.gz for more info.

If you are using dhcp, then bringing the interface down and then back up again should automatically set your resolv.conf file.
