Wheezy Wireless Unavailable

How do I connect to the wireless network?

This laptop works well with fully free software. No proprietary drivers are required. (I know this, as the laptop can run Trisquel, the fully free Ubuntu spin, which has a libre-kernel.) The laptop is connecting to the wireless connection using another OS, so the wireless should be working.

Debian Wheezy Gnome was installed using a Network Installation OK. I logged in to the desktop. The wireless connection did not work; it was unmanaged.

Quote:

Set managed=true in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf.
Restart NetworkManager:
/etc/init.d/network-manager restart
I rebooted, too. There is still no wireless connection. Wireless is set to "On". Aeroplane Mode is "Off". No wireless networks appear, though I know some are actually available. Network-Manager-Gnome states that wireless is "Unavailable".

What can I do to reach the Internet?

How is your card listed in lspci or lsusb? And, if possible, which module controls it?

yeehi 01-17-2013 11:55 AM

Thanks for looking at this.

Here is the output of 3 commands. (Sorry, I would edit down the output, but I don't know which info would be helpful. I have marked what I think might be relevant in italics. I am not sure about how to determine the module.)

The laptop has this adapter:

Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter

I want to connect via wi-fi.

lspci -nn

iwigconfig shows no wireless extensions, if that is any help...

I hope this helps somebody help me! :)

Ensure that wpasupplicant is installed.

widget 01-17-2013 06:06 PM

This may sound silly but do you have gdm3 installed?

I know of at least 2 people with netinstalled Wheezy that had a problem with wireless and fixed it by installing gdm3. Appears to be something with the DM that effects how NM works.

I know nothing at all about wireless. Have never used it.

Netinstalls I do know about and also how tired one can get of a gui login screen. While most of my installs have some sort of loging the ones I use most don't and I use the tty login.

It is that type of install where these folks had trouble.

I do not know if they tried wicd instead of NM either.

frankbell 01-17-2013 10:01 PM

My Debian system is wired, so I've not had to deal with wireless on Debian, but have you consulted the Debian wiki article?

yeehi 01-18-2013 05:08 AM

SOLVED

I had to remove wlan0 from this file:

/etc/network/interfaces

Quote:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid ***
wpa-psk ***

I am happily online now :)

Thanks for looking!

btw, I now have another post-installation problem: synaptic requires that I insert DVD 1 into the CD. I installed using a USB memory stick, not a DVD. Synaptic downloads but won't complete installation. I will start a new thread about it.
