What happens when root dir fills up?

My 7GB "/" root partition is almost full and is causing problems. I have more space on the drive and even have a whole second drive sitting around. However, i need to either:

A) expand the root directory -or-

B) move the contents of the root directory to another partition.

Is there a safe way to do this? Thanks for your input. it's truly appreciated.

try to see how much old packages, you have downloade through apt, fills

du -h /var/cache/apt

If it's a, you can remove it with

apt-get clean

You have to be root, to do the last step!

Thanks. I've already cleaned up. I don't have any more than 11MB in that directory. I Have about 500MB left on the partition. However, i topped out recently and it caused a lot of problems like not being able to log into a window manager! I figured out it was the partition that was full and i cleaned apt, but i still need more space.
