What does Debian do with my USB printer?
 

I have this Canon i250 printer that's been laying around for a couple of weeks due to the fact that I've been too lazy to try and get it working on Linux. Last night, though, I decided to give it a try and went downloaded a driver from Canon, http://www.canon.co.nz/products/prin...0_drivers.html . That driver gave me made dependency troubles, referring to a bunch of libraries I couldn't, for the life of me, find anywhere. Then, I came across http://www.turboprint.de and decided to give a shot using a demo version of their driver, since I had heard great things about them. The problem I ran into then was trying to locate my printer... I plugged it in and turned it on. Then to be sure not to run into any hotplug problems I rebooted the computer. I was able to install the turboprint driver easily... but locating the device itself was my problem, and still is. So... I guess my question's this:

What does Debian do with my USB printer? Or, rather, where does Debian put my USB printer?

Are the usb modules loaded? Like usb-ohci.

My USB printer (Epson) is in /dev/usb/lp0. I used Mozilla Firefox (http://localhost:631) to configure it with CUPS and it works perfectly. Good luck with turboprint! :)

Moloko, I did select the usb modules while compiling my kernel, both OHCI and the other one... but doing an "lsmod" it doesn't show them loaded. So I tried to do "modprobe usb-ohci" but it couldn't find the module... Am I missing something here?

If the modules is compiled in the kernel it is loaded. Check if your printer is at least detected during boot with dmesg or check /var/log/messages.

if both uhci and ohci are compiled into the kernel it can cause problems iirc

Ugh, that must be it then... I somehow got the impression from reading the help on USB during the kernel configuration that compiling both wouldn't cause any problems.

I also have an Epson USB printer (Epson Stylus Photo RX500), but there's no way for me to make it print. I configured it with CUPS, and it seems to be everything alright, simply the printer doesn't print anything! It is found on "/dev/usb/lp0", and no errors are given. When I try to print the test page, I see te job is correctly sent and executed, but the printer seems to be sleeping (it's turned on, by the way :-))!
Can you please post me your CUPS configuration files?
I'm sadly wondering why my printer doesn't work, and I *DON'T* want to switch to Win just to print a few pages!
I've already downloaded the drivers for my printer from the Epson WebSite, but the problem still exists!

I could sure use this also. I have the same RX500 printer with exactly the same issue. Everything seems to work properly except.....it doesn't print.

Printer: Epson Stylus Photo RX500

I got into printing a sort of test page with a tool called "mtink".
That tool let me see the ink level and configure my printer (also with cartridge alignment test page).
I'm happy 'cause finally my printer cried out a paper from GNU/Linux! Let's party!!!
No way with CUPS yet... but I keep on trying!

It's funny. I actually got the damn thing to print as it should through CUPS. I was printing documents from OOo, pictures from Gimp, then I rebooted.........................nothing. It didn't print anymore. I have yet been able to bring it back to life. I have no idea what I did to get it working.
I think it had something to do with http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/dl_spc.html, but I can't get it going again.

There is hope.

Linux and printing is one of the very few things I haven't been able to do. I gave up on CUPS and turboprint. They just wouldn't work. Set up a print server on a windows machine my parents use...

LinuxPrinting.org says Epson Stylus Photo RX500 "works partially".

I'd suggest that you use the following command (as root) to ensure that you've got all the needed software installed: "aptitude --with-recommends install foomatic-bin cupsys-driver-gimpprint". Then try again the usual http://localhost:631 CUPS configuration tool in your web browser.

I was having exactly the same problem as outlined above but with an Epson cx6400.

I had tried everything :confused: -- but the previous post contained the solution that eventually worked for me.

So for those at their wits end, do try:

"aptitude --with-recommends install foomatic-bin cupsys-driver-gimpprint"

Not sure why it worked or what it changed but it did work. :cool:

So what about Canon i250 ? Did you setup it? if so please describe how !
