OH YEAH!! I am one happy camper now!!
I got rid of my crappy 3D icons today; swapped them out for a better looking, more functional set of grounation points...now I can Copy and Paste from where I intended, every time! But that isn't the best part by a long shot...
I just finished setting up my Knoppix kernel's source (2.6.7-second HD install, already updated from 2.4.26) properly after some good folks helped me figure out why I had no kernel controls...
Seems old Klaus K. decided to leave the source off the disk to free up space for more applications, which certainly explains why there was no response from the kernel configuration editor in Control Center.
I added the sources to /linux and rebooted to the 2.6 partition, then set the proper system allowances for this PC (real nice gaming rig). After running a console over to /usr/src/ and running the script
( I didn't trust that at first - not used to doing all dependency repairs in one step...) and reinstalling Lilo, I rebooted.
Now before I continue, let me point out that before this, I normally had around 5-15% memory free in the Info Center....
The 2.6.7 came up again and it booted smoothly, as it always has...no faster or slower. Then I tried to surf the Web....and it was not seeing the LAN. I checked the other PC and it was fine; it had not heard a peep from the Knop box, though.
After simply setting up the NIC's DHCP again, eth0 is zippier than ever....I'll admit, it had me a little worried for a second, there.
I'm pretty sure the reason for that speed increase is the fact that this PC, which was auto-detected as an i386 during install, is now officially kicking some serious Pentium 4 i686 butt!
And the part that has me happiest of all is the fact that Info Center now shows my total memory usage at UNDER 50% with three browser windows open, running Samba, and connected at over 1000Mbit/s! I had to reboot again just to be sure it wasn't a fluke. When freshly booted there is more than 60% of my RAM free!!
I am very pleased. So much so I had to shut down my admin and tell everyone about it!
Apps and folders open just a 'little quicker' now that the 2.80E, 800MHz FSB and 512MB of DDR400 are being used properly, too!
Thanks for sharing my joy!
Gotta run. There's a pooch-slow 2.4.26 kernel here that badly needs my help!!
Best regards,
