Weird apt-get update output, DiffIndex ign???

What does it mean the "Ign" lines?

It keeps saying that over and over with apt-get update, I never seen it before. But on etch/stable on 3 different systems I get this, whats wrong here????

The Ign is where you have a source in your /etc/apt/sources.list file that is commented out. It is probably just doing this now becuase when you updated, it changed your sources.list file. If it ever fails to get a source, it will tell you at the end.

I'm not sure that it has to be commented out sources. I get that message often, but I have no commented out sources in my sources list. I thought that it was simply the package manager's way of saying, No changes to this source list (since your last update), so I am ignoring it.

Your correct and with the original poster running stable he is not likely to see many changes except for security updates.

Try this:

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

it might help...

No! "Hit" must mean it is not updated. I get the "ign" lines on every "DiffIndex". Always on 2 computers.

I'm not a apt expert so not sure about the cause. It looks like some mirrors just don't have that information. So if anybody doesn't see these "Ign" lines, can he post his sources.list?

UPDATE: I see as well this but am not convinced it is the case...

http://www.ducea.com/2006/05/29/debi...ist-retrieval/

What I gather from the posts I have read is this.

Hit means apt checked the package list the timestamps match and there are no changes
Ign means there are no changes in the pdiff index file so don't bother downloading it

Both are normal message and can be safely ignored.

Code:

it-etch:/# aptitude update

As far as I can tell the changes have to do with reducing bandwidth, the Ign message appeared when pdiff support was added to apt. Instead of downloading the full package change list every time it only downloads the DiffIndex files that have changed. Helpful for people with slow connections.

You'll notice in my update above the one DiffIndex at the bottom that had changes then downloaded three diff files.
All other sources checked show either Hit or Ign due to no changes.

I can't say my analysis is 100% accurate because I didn't find much on this topic either.
