VLC not showing video. Debian Lenny 64.

Hi!

What's the best way you've found to make VLC show videos?

I am running Debian Lenny 64 and vlc doesn't show any video.

There are some old threads talking about this but I would prefer an updated solution (if there is one, of course).

Thank you!

I install it and use it and it works.

Your post is quite vague, please be more specific.

The problem is that after installing vlc from the repositories, it works for music but it doesn't show any video. If yours works in debian lenny 64, let me know, please, how you installed it.

The rest of the players work (xine, mplayer, etc). So, it is not a codec problem.

Thanks again,

VLC doesn't use system codecs, it has them built in. What version VLC do you have? Which repo?

VLC works fine for me on x64 Debian Testing.

Same issue

I'm having the same issue. It's not working for every type of file except for .mpeg files.

I get the same error for any other type of file, which is this:

main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

I got this error when I was trying to play a .avi with the XVID codec, but the same error pops up with any other format, except with 'XVID' replaced by another codec.

So the issue seems to be with vlc not recognizing codecs. I'm guessing this is because, for some reason, they are not part of the packages in 64bit Debian lenny.

Did anyone else have this issue and know how to fix this?

Assuming its not a codec problem, e.g. it happens on all videos, regardless of filetype.

Use xv as vlc's video output.

If it is already selected to be in xv and you still don't get video, swich it to x11.
In order to use xv you will need to have the proper drivers for your vga installed.

To see if you can use xv, run xvinfo in a terminal. If you get something like this, you dont have the xv option with your current drivers.

Code:
$ xvinfo
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
 no adaptors present

Then you are fine with xv. I think its a codec issue. Try to install w64codecs from debian multimedia, or mplayer.

And excuse me for not completely understanding your post the first time I read it
