using an earlier version of a package

If I have a package like xserver-xorg-core, and I use lenny or even sid, and I wanted to try out etch... what stops me?

First I pin the etch version, then I change my sources.list to include etch repositories, then I 'aptitude update'. Now I want to simply 'aptitude full-upgrade' and have xserver-xorg-core installed, preferably with all that depends on it... I don't know why it doesn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
