Quick thought & question,

I'm used to using debian in cmd line mode only, but i'm setting a mail server using iredmail and to connect to the admin portal I need a GUI browser.

Is there a way to use something like konqueror/firefox and start it straight from cmd line without having to launch KDE (or equivalent).

I tried using KDE but it made me have heart palpitations it was so infuriating. So it got the boot. Also it was really slow, i'm connecting to the a VM on a remote root server via ssh to access a hypervisor. Which means I really need to keep the resource low.

Any ideas? is this even possible?

P.s. i'm no command line ninja, merely a padawan so -vv explanations appreciated

if you need to use firefox on a server ?
you will need to install xorg and at least some of Gnome for firefox to work

HOWEVER
There is a terminal based web browser
type "y" to say yes to except the certificate

You neither need X nor Gnome (or parts of it) to run Firefox/Iceweasel, just install Firefox/Iceweasel and allow your SSH to forward X. If you want to be low on resources you might try a more lightweight browser, like Midori or Qupzilla.

just to accelerate my learning of w3m... I've connected to the site quite happily but i'm being given a warning about javscript being require to work? If i ignore this what are the implications? -radio buttons not working, perhaps?- Is it worth installing java? I'd put up with some pain, to avoid it. Its one less security issue to worry about, which is a plus.

INstalling Java won't help, Java and Javascript are two different languages and it is the browser itself that has to have support for Javascript implemented if you need it. Implications of Javascript usually means that buttons and similar functions will not work.

You can install al lightweight DE (XFCE, LXDE) or WM (OpenBox).

Can you not connect to the portal remotely, i.e. from a browser on another computer? That would eliminate the need to install X on the server itself. Or am I missing something here? I am not familiar with iredmail, but web admin interfaces I have used do not require access from a browser located on the server, just to be set up so it can be accessed remotely.

For now I don't have remote connectivity. Later on I will... I haven't followed what you would call the most logical deployment path
