usbip version mismatch in wheezy (trying to connect to 0.1.7)

Sorry for the confusion. I removed the question thinking I solved it. Unfortunately I didn't.

Here's the problem:

I had squeeze installed on amd64 (sunfire). I used usbip to connect to a snake os device with a serial device connected to its usb port. snake os runs usbip 0.1.7. On the client (wheezy) I did:
modprobe usbip_common_mod
usbip -l snake
- snake
2-2: Future Technology Devices International, Ltd : FT232 USB-Serial (UART) IC (0403:6001)
: /sys/devices/platform/str8100-ohci/usb2/2-2
: (Defined at Interface level) (00/00/00)
: 0 - Vendor Specific Class / Vendor Specific Subclass / Vendor Specific Protocol (ff/ff/ff)

usbip -a snake 2-2

It worked. I had a serial device on squeezy, which I could use.

After upgrading to wheezy I get version mismatch when I try to list the devices on snake.

I installed usbip 0.1.7 and the list command worked fine.
To attach the device I had to load 2 kernel modules:
modprobe usbip-core
modprobe vhci-hcd

usbip -a snake 2-2
8 ports available

port 0 attached

However, few seconds later I get a kernel panic on wheezy.

Any advice on how to proceed will be appreciated. Should I run 2.6 kernel? I don't want to muck with snake os.
