usb wireless nic

ok I have a compaq wireless usb nic card that I have found drivers for linux for it. The problem is that upon reboot, it does not work. I have to either unplug and replug it or run ifdown then ifup a couple of times before it is recognized. Is there a way to automate this on boot or does anyone have any experience with a wireless usb card in debian.

I am using the 2.4.18 kernel and hotplug is installed.
