USB dies after a while (Debian Lenny)

Hya,

I need to troubleshoot, but I do not know how.

Problem is: My Debian Lenny, (on laptop, Xfce4), USB dies after several (20-100) window focus. Mouse dies, disks through USB cannot be accessed, power stays on (mouse LED stays on).

With this hardware, I have following trouble. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=584747
So that I cannot check other OS.

I am not quite sure if this is hardware related or software problem.

Overall, there are several other threads about dead USB, while something seems to be wrong with my hardware.

I will appreciate any suggestion.

Hya,

update.

It looks like that ohci_hcd module chokes. (Most of the other modules can be removed. This is the only one which is not used by other modules and unloadable.)

USB mouse does not die with WidNoes. So, hardware may not be a problem.

So far, this trouble happens only when X is on.

Hya,

Update.

I did clean install (lenny), and problem looks like gone. So, my guess is irqconflict or something.

Edit: Problem happens. it is not gone.

Hya,

Update:

1: when glxgears is interrupted by ctl-c, the content of the window (gears) stays on desktop and only window frame goes away. When it is closed by closed button on window title bar, it is ok. fgl_glxgears looks ok.

2: As suggested by http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1840698 "noapic irqpoll pci=routeirq" looked ok, (and at least survival time was much longer). However, at the end I got completely frozen system (which is frozen screen saver). Also, cpufreqd is compromised, only works two frequencies, and slow response.

3: When mouse is connected through USB2 hub, which uses ehci driver, symptom is different. Average survival time is longer; when things go wrong, mouse gets lousy (cursor jumping all over the place, like too much acceleration.); and other USB ports on the hub die.

4. This one has also problem, I am not sure if these two are related. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...=492159&page=2

Hya,

Update:
kernel parameters - noapic pci=routeirq solve mouse problem. However, with these parameters, wireless (madwifi, ath0) does not work correct, (it is very very very slow.)

Hya,

Update:

Following kernel parameters do not work,
pci=usepirqmask, pci=assign-busses, pci=biosirq, pci=nobios

At this moment, penguin lives happy with
pci=bios

Happy Penguins!

Edit: with pci=bios, penguin lives longer, but eventually dies.

Hya.

Update:

Now I know how to kill USB.

Without ATI drivers installed, kick in glxgears while USB disk I/O.

So far, almost all kernel parameters have been checked. Either non-boot or dead USB. No luck yet.

Hya,

Update:

Following kernel boot parameters work:
Code:

noapic pci=noacpi
noapic noacpi looked good, but did not shutdown.

It took almost a month to figure out. After knowing how to reproduce dead mouse (USB), I could try combination of parameters.

Happy Penguins!
